How Is Cervical Dysplasia Treated?

Cervical dysplasia is a condition where abnormal cells form on the cervix in the female body. There are several ways to treat this condition. One of them is called LEEP, which stands for loop electrosurgical excision procedure. In this treatment, a tiny wire is heated with radio waves and cuts away the tissue that is abnormal.

Frozen

Another type of treatment is called cryosurgery. In this procedure, instead of using extreme heat, extreme cold is used. A cryoprobe is inserted into the vagina and up to the cervix. The cells that are abnormal are then frozen and then shed away. In a similar procedure called cryocautery, the cells are cauterized instead of frozen.

Cone Biopsy

A cone biopsy is a procedure that is intended to do two things. First, it is used to remove abnormal cells. Secondly, the cells that have been removed are examined to see if there is cancer. If there is, then further treatments are needed. As the name indicates, a cone-shaped sample of the abnormal cells is removed from the cervix and then looked at under a microscope for evaluation.

Laser

Another type of treatment is done in the hospital under anesthesia. It is called laser ablation or vaporization. In this procedure, a laser is used to destroy the abnormal cells in the cervix. There is no sample obtained in this procedure for further diagnosis.
