  1. Induction Generators

    • Windmills that generate energy contain an induction generator. An induction generator does not make energy, but rather converts kinetic (physical) energy into electrical energy by spinning a wire within a magnetic field, which causes an electrical current to flow through the wire.

    How Windmills Work

    • A windmill usually consists of three parts. The blades (the parts that look like a fan) "catch" the wind. Sitting at a slight angle to the direction of the wind, the fans are pushed in a circle as the wind blows against them.

      The hub of the windmill is like the hub of a wheel, with the fans sticking out like spokes around it. The fans turn the hub as they move in a circle.

      The hub is attached to the shaft, which spins as the hub spins. The shaft is connected to whatever mechanism the windmill is designed to turn.

    How Windmills Generate Energy

    • In energy-generating windmills, the shaft is connected to an induction generator inside the structure. The wind turns the fans, which turn the hub, which spins the shaft, which provides the kinetic energy to spin the wires in the generator.
