Commercial drain cleaners typically use corrosive chemicals to clear clogged pipes. Acid drain cleaners are the harshest, and use a chemical reaction between the hydrogen ions and the blockage material to remove the clog. Caustic drain cleaners are more common alternative and use the chemical reaction of hydroxide ions with the clog to remove the blockage. A third type of commercial drain cleaner, the enzymatic cleaner, uses enzymes from bacteria to eat away at blockages. This type of cleaner is usually reserved for organic blockages or routine pipe maintenance.

Pulse Jet Drain Cleaners

The pulse jet method for cleaning drains should only be used by a professional. This involves using pressurized water to dislodge the clog. These use a pressure of up to 1400 psi to clean out the pipes. Pulse jet drain cleaners are not caustic and are ideal for older pipes.

Homemade Drain Cleaners

For a less dangerous and more earth friendly drain cleaning solution, a few household ingredients can be used to clean a clogged drain. To clean a problem drain, pour one cup of baking soda down the drain followed by one cup of white vinegar. The alkaline properties of the baking soda combined with the acidic properties of the vinegar work together to clear the blockage. The mixture should be left to bubble for about 30 minutes, then rinsed down with hot water.
