How Are Ear Candles Made?

  1. Cut strips of thin clothes about 18 inches long and 3/4-inch wide. Ear candles are usually made from muslin, but you can also use the fabric from a thin sheet or pillow case.
  2. Melt beeswax in a double boiler, usually about 4 oz. per candle. When the wax is completely melted, add a few drops of essential oil. Lavender or tea tree oil are good choices.
  3. Use a dowel about 3/8-inch in diameter as a mold. This dowel should be sharpened at one end and oiled to allow the candle to slide off it easily once it's formed.
  4. Dip your strip of fabric in the wax and use your dowel to lift it out. Let it cool a little so you can touch it and wrap the fabric around the dowel starting at the pointed end. Wrap it all the way up the dowel and then smooth the fabric down with your finger. Dip the pointed end in your pan of wax to make the wax tip.
  5. When the wax is nearly dry but still soft to the touch, slide the candle off the dowel. Use a sharp object like a pencil to poke a hole in the top (pointy end) of the candle. Let it dry completely before you use it.
