What Is the Procedure of a Glycolic Peel?
-
Function
-
A glycolic acid peel sloughs away the upper layers of dead skin cells to provide anti-aging benefits to skin. A mild chemical peel, it is most commonly applied to the face but is also sometimes used for improving skin appearance on hands, arms, neck and upper chest. The procedure treats sun damage, removes freckles and other pigmentation problems, and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles. It also can stimulate the production of new collagen, which improves skin texture. Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugarcane and fruit.

Glycolic acid peels can be applied by beauty therapists and other skin care professionals, unlike peels that cause more severe effects, which must be performed by dermatologists or other physicians. Typically more than one peel is required to see significant improvement, and the procedure can be repeated every two to three weeks as needed.

Pre-Treatment
-
For several weeks before the peel, the client applies a pre-treatment cream to wear overnight. These products usually contain a low-concentration exfoliation agent, which can be glycolic acid, and they improve the peel results and may also reduce the time necessary for healing.
Procedure
-
The peel itself takes about 20 minutes. First the client's face is washed thoroughly, and then the glycolic acid solution--in concentrations up to 30 percent--is applied for several minutes. Usually it is applied with a sponge to several facial regions. The peel stings, so people might want to take an over-the-counter painkiller beforehand. The peel is then washed off with water or neutralized with an alkaline substance such as sodium bicarbonate.
After-effects
-
For the next two or three days, a sunburn-like effect occurs with some redness and possibly swelling, while the outer layers of skin dry up and gradually peel away. This allows a new, soft layer of skin to appear. During this time, the individual can continue to use makeup if desired, and applying a moisturizer regularly is recommended.
