- The news director supervises all aspects of the newsroom and has final say on what is covered on any particular day. The news director starts the morning with a news staff meeting to discuss the day's events, review potential stories and assign them accordingly.
- The assignments editor is responsible for setting up interviews, following up on leads that come into the news room and dispatching photographers and reporters to stories. Following the morning news meeting, the assignments editor makes contact with potential inverviewees to set up an interview. She also sends photographers to cover press conferences or events that do not require reporter presence. The assignments editor is the heart of a newsroom, because she has contacts with all public relations representatives throughout a particular area. The assignments editor fields all incoming information.
- Once the morning meeting is over, reporters begin their day with setting up interviews and researching the subject, on which they will report that day. Each reporter is assigned a photographer, who may be sent out to shoot video to be used in the story. The reporter will accompany the photographer on any interviews he needs to complete the story. Once written, the reporter turns his finished product over to the producer for approval for the evening newscast.
- The producer is responsible for 100 percent of the content of each broadcast to which she is assigned. During the morning meeting, producers decide what content will be included in the show. She is then assigned the reporter covering the content for the show. If a photographer covers a story without a reporter, the producer looks at the video shot and writes that story. She also writes any other stories that will fill the show. The only stories not written by the producer are the stories assigned to a reporter.
- Editors take the video shot during the course of the day and edit it to be used as content in the evening broadcast. Photographers edit the content they shoot with reporters; however, editors are needed to edit all other content not covered by a reporter.
