Ultrasonic nebulizers are an inhalation method used to deliver medication into the lungs of a patient. The machines are meant for use by those who cannot use a hand-held inhaler. The word nebulize indicates the reduction of a liquid into a fine mist. Ultrasonics is a method that can be used to break up a liquid and turn it into smaller particles through the use of intense sound waves.
Why an Ultrasonic Nebulizer?

By introducing the medication to a high-frequency ultrasonic process, the liquid becomes a mist or fog. Because an ultrasonic nebulizer produces a more uniform mist filled with smaller particles of medicine, it is believed to be a superior method of delivering medication--the smaller the particle, the easier and deeper the medicine can penetrate the lungs. In addition, the ultrasonic models are more compact in size, weigh less than compressor nebulizers, do not necessarily require dilution of the medication and make far less noise than compressor type nebulizers.

Some ultrasonic nebulizers require water to be added as a carrier for the medication during the creation of the mist and some do not. Basic components include the transducer (where ultrasonic nebulization takes place), medication cup, mesh cap, mouthpiece and mask. Professional ultrasonic nebulizers used by hospitals and physicians will be equipped with an adjustable arm that allows movement and further reach of the breathing tube and mouthpiece.
What Medications Work

Ultrasonic nebulizers require solution-based medications. The nebulizers require a very small particle liquid in order to work properly. Suspension medications such as Budesonide are made up of larger particles of medication which the ultrasonic nebulizer cannot break down. If a medication is not the correct type but is used in the nebulizer, the ultrasonic process will not occur, and the medicine will be wasted.
Nebulizer Maintenance

Compact, portable ultrasonic nebulizers use ordinary tap or distilled water when required. Using cool water should result in a lower rate of nebulization. Warm water will raise the rate. These units should be cleaned before first use and after every use. Allow the unit to cool completely before cleaning. All remaining medication should be removed and the medicine cup cleaned. Clean the mouth piece, empty the water tank and dry with a soft cloth. Allow parts to air dry and follow all the manufacturer's recommendations.
