From Quick Guide: Botox Basics

    Introduction

  1. In a world obsessed with perfection and beauty, cosmetic alterations have become the norm. Botox injections are among the most common cosmetic procedures. In fact, botox has become has become a $1 billion-dollar-a-year industry as of 2009, with no signs of it slowing down anytime soon.
  2. What is Botox?

  3. Botox is actually a watered-down version of botulism. Botulism is a dangerous disease caused by a powerful neurotoxin. However, when diluted, there is just enough neurotoxin left to paralyze the muscles in the face that are responsible for causing wrinkles.
  4. The Procedure

  5. When you enter a cosmetic medical professional's office, he will ask you to flex and contract your facial muscles. This will reveal which muscles are causing the greatest influence on the visual wrinkles on your face. The cosmetic professional will then mark the areas on your face where the muscles are located and use those markings as a guide map of where to inject the botox. A small needle is then inserted just below the skin, and a small amount of botox is pushed underneath the skin and into the muscle. This causes the muscle to weaken or be paralyzed completely.
  6. Results

  7. There is no recovery period needed for botox injections. You should see a noticeable difference within two to four days after your treatment. Results are only temporary, and will last up to four months before you need another injection.
