What Causes Diarrhea in Dogs?

  1. People Food

    • For any dog to maintain optimal health it must adhere to a certain diet. Dogs' internal organs work differently, and they need different nutrients than humans to stay healthy. When they do not get the proper vitamins, mineral and nutrients they need, it often shows up as diarrhea. This can be solved easily by feeding your dog a brand of commercial dog food. Keep in mind your dog's age and breed when choosing the food.

    Worms

    • Worms is another reason dogs get diarrhea. Intestinal worms can get inside your dog from eating feces and from physical contact. There are several different types of worms, such as round worms, hook worms and tape worms. Medications can solve this problem, but it must be caught at the first signs of diarrhea.

    Poisoning

    • Poison is another way a dog can contract a case of diarrhea. At times, mean neighbors or malicious individuals can poison your dog. Other times they may happen upon some type of poison and ingest it. In this instance the diarrhea will be accompanied by listlessness and loss of appetite. There is often no cure for poisoning and so medical treatment should be sought as soon as possible.
