How Does a Zenith Universal Remote Control Work on Different Electronic Devices?

At one time in television viewing history, you probably had a remote control for each piece of audio or video equipment. One for the television, one for the stereo, one for VCR and so on and so on. But with modern advancements in convenience and technology, you can now control all of your equipment with a single remote control. How is this accomplished? It's all about infrared (IR) technology.

Zenith universal remote controls, as well as all other modern remote controls, use IR signals to communicate with electronic equipment that have an IR receiver. These binary codes are delivered by way of pulses of infrared light that are invisible to the human eye.
Inside the television, CD player or other piece of equipment you are using the remote control on is a microprocessor that is designed to understand the binary code and then carry out the specific demand.
Zenith universal remote controls can be programmed to control a number of different devices.

Most brand name components feature a specific set of codes that can be put into a universal remote control. For instance, if you have a Zenith universal remote and you wish for it to control your RCA stereo receiver, you will have to input the corresponding code into the remote control.
In most cases, this is how the process of programming a universal remote is done:
1.) Press and release the button for the device you wish to program.
2.) Press and hold down the Setup button until you see the light on the remote blink once or twice depending on the unit.
3.) Punch in the correct code for the brand and component you want to control.
4.) Aim the remote at the component and hit the Power button.
If it doesn't power on, there may be a second or third code you can try to program (see Resources).
