You can purchase a garage door insulation kit at your local hardware store or the Home Depot. The garage door insulation you purchase will probably look like very thick foam pressed in between sheets of flat foil. Purchase some aluminum foil tape, also available at hardware stores and the Home Depot, and a utility knife. Using a tape measure, carefully measure the gaps in between your garage door when the garage is both open and shut. Using the utility knife, cut the insulation foam to the measurements you determined, and press it in place with aluminum foil tape.

Not all insulation is created equally. Asbestos was used as insulation in many homes and garages for years, but it is no longer legal to use as it has been found to be hazardous. Asbestos is a fibrous insulation that can get into your lungs if it is disturbed. Before attempting to insulate your garage, be sure that you do not have any asbestos in your garage. You can get an asbestos check from a home inspector. If you do have asbestos in your garage, you will have to get a professional remove it with special tools and take it completely out of the house before you can make any other changes to your garage.
