How Are Ball Point Pens Made?

  1. Invention

    • Ball point pens are the predecessor of fountain pens. The ball point pen was originally invented in the 1930s, but failed due to improper craftsmanship and chemicals. The modern ball point pen was patented in 1988.

    How Ball Point Pens Work

    • Ball point pens evenly disperse ink via a rolling ball that's placed in a socket within the pen's tube. Unlike quills and fountain pens, the ink used in ball point pens dries quickly. The ball socket is tightly sealed, allowing just enough room for the ball to roll freely. Ink is stored in a thin plastic tube that's attached to an inner reservoir that allows ink to flow into the ball socket.

    Historical Importance

    • Since the 1700s, several people have attempted to improve writing tools. Early pens leaked, clogged and were constructed improperly. In the mid 1940s, Eberhard Faber mass produced an improved modern design that was modeled after a mechanical pencil.
