- There are a number of things to take into consideration when purchasing a bicycle helmet. The first thing you need to assess is what type of cycling you are going to be doing, because each requires a different type of helmet. If you are going to be mountain biking ,you will want to purchase a helmet with a rating that will protect your head from hazards you may run into biking through the woods. These helmets are rated "off road" helmets. Road cycling requires helmets that are lighter in weight and more aerodynamic. These will have more air vents in them and are rated "on road." There are also helmets that are rated for both on road and off road use if you do both.
- Make sure to buy a helmet that is the right size for you. You will want the helmet to sit on your head an inch or so above your eyebrows, so take your measurement there. The chin strap should fit snugly but not tightly. You should be able to talk freely without your chin coming into contact with the chin strap, but if you open your mouth widely, the helmet should be pulled onto your head.
- The other things to take into consideration are extras. There are many colors and styles available to suit your personality. If you are a serious road cyclist, you will want a lightweight helmet (which tend to be more expensive). If you are more of a recreational cyclist, you may want to spend less and get something heavier and more durable. Regardless of which helmet you choose, you should always replace your helmet after you have been in a bicycle crash and at least every 5 years, even if you have been accident-free.
