How Does a DVD Ripper Work?

    Reading the Disk

  1. The purpose of a DVD ripper is to copy the contents of a DVD and transfer them to the hard drive of a computer or other electronic device. Once the DVD is placed into the drive and the ripper program is activated, the computer scans the DVD. If the ripper is of good quality, the program can deactivate or circumvent the copy protection on most DVDs. The ripper will then begin to read the disk and copy its information to the hard drive or write directly to another DVD in another drive.
  2. Compression

  3. There are a few DVD formats available, including DVD-5 and DVD-9. It is important to know what format you are ripping and what format you are writing in. A DVD-5 disk contains less information and can be directly copied to another DVD-5 or a DVD-9. A DVD-9 contains more information and can be ripped to another DVD-9, but the information must be compressed to fit onto a DVD-5 disk (or the data must be copied to two DVD-5 disks). Most rippers have a compression function, but the quality and readability of the DVD may be affected.
  4. Pitfalls

  5. Once the DVD has been ripped and copied, there should be no problem in playing the copy on both the DVD drive and on a home entertainment system. But depending on the ripper program, this may not always be the case. DVDs have both copy protection and a region code imprinted on them. In other words, a DVD from Canada or France may not be able to be played in a DVD player in the United States. It is important that the ripper program be able to deactivate both protections, or the DVD may not play.
  6. Computer Considerations

  7. The best ripper program in the world must have a good computer to operate it. When a DVD is ripped, several gigabytes of information are transferred to the hard drive. Be sure you have plenty of memory available or the ripper will be unable to copy the disk. Also, if you want to make DVD copies, then your hard drive must not only be able to read DVDs but write to them as well.
