How Do Coleman Lanterns Work?

Coleman lanterns use white gas, other wise known as Coleman fuel. The fuel is available at most outdoor equipment retailers and is manufactured by other companies also. To fuel the lantern, unscrew the knurled knob on the the base of the lantern, which is also the fuel tank. Carefully pour the fuel into the tank until it reaches a level just below the fill hole. Use small funnel to aid in the fueling. Replace the cap on the lantern. Close the fuel container and place it well to the side of the lantern.
Lighting

The first step in lighting the lantern is to pressurize the tank. This is done by means of a small brass push rod which is incorporated into the tank fill cap. Turn the small knob on the cap to the left and pull out. Push the rod in and pull out several times to pressurize the tank. This step is necessary to force the gas vapor, which burns, up through a tube to the mantles of the lantern. When pressurized, re-close the plunger. At the base of the glass globe, there will be a knob for opening a valve to allow gas to enter the mantles and globe. Turn the knob to the indicated spot to allow only a small amount of gas to enter. Lighting will be done by either a push button speaker or by manually inserting a match through an opening at the base of the globe.
Adjustments

Once the mantles are lit and burning, allow the lantern to warm. Gradually increase the brightness of the flame by turning the adjustment knob. This will allow more gas to reach the mantles thus creating a brighter light. It may be necessary to periodically re-pressurize the fuel tank to ensure a proper amount of fuel will travel to the globe. Just as the lantern may be adjusted for brightness, it may also be dimmed to a point where the mantles are just glowing.
