How Do PS3 Remote Controls Work?

Using the Playstation controllers to control a DVD remote can be an awkward process at the best of times. Fortunately, Sony and other companies have realized this and made remote control available for players that also want to use the Playstation 3 as a full-featured DVD player and view Blu Ray movies. The PS3 remote works like other controllers by sending out signals that are picked up by the device and interpreted by an internal processor, but the system remote controls understands only Bluetooth commands. An enterprising programmer may someday write an application that lets a PS3 owner use a Bluetooth enabled cell phone to play Blu Ray DVDs on Sony's latest console.
Bluetooth remotes and devices that translate Infrared commands to Bluetooth commands are available for this console. The advantage of the former is that they are not usually high in price, and the latter allow for greater backwards compatibility.

Most remotes send infrared signals to the devices that they control. The long established pattern of using Infrared communication has been used since the remote control's invention. Sony decided to depart from this pattern for the Playstation 3 for reasons known only to its marketing executives. What this means for the consumer is that he must purchase a special device to control the DVD functions available on the PS3.
The remote made by Sony requires no special devices, but other PS3 remote controls offer a device that plugs into the system that translates IR commands into Bluetooth commands that the console understands. Nyko's device uses a USB dongle that plugs into the console's USB ports. Joystig.com notes with regret that Nyko's remote control cannot be used with other devices.

Playstation Gamers who do not wish to buy a new remote have several options, all of which convert standard IR commands into the Bluetooth functions understood by the PS3. The prices for these devices can vary from $20 to $100, and they vary greatly in their sizes.
The primary advantage of these devices is they allow the owner of a universal remote to use it to control his Playstation 3 console. The major drawback is that a universal remote may not support Playstation 2 commands
