    Prep Work

  1. A carpet cleaner machine, often called a steam cleaner or a wet cleaner, is first prepared by filling it with hot water and a cleaning solution. A common cleaning solution is 1 cup vinegar with 21/2 gallons hot tap water. You also prepare for the cleaning by spraying a heavily stained area with pre-spray, which liquefies dirt and makes it easier to clean (be sure to let the pre-spray work for about 15 minutes before using the carpet cleaner machine). Lastly, position the machine atop the affected area and turn it on.
  2. The Cleaning Process

  3. Push the button that releases the hot water solution, and slowly run the machine forward over the soiled area. Run it in reverse without pushing the steam-release button. The hot steam will penetrate the deepest carpet fibers and loosen the dirt particles clinging to them. Once the dirt particles are loose, the steam cleaner vacuums them up. The steam cleaner's brush further loosens stubborn particles, which is why you should run over the area with the cleaner several times to see best results. Lastly, the cleaning solution in the steam sanitizes the carpet and makes it as good as new.
  4. Post-Cleaning

  5. After you've finished with your carpet cleaner, empty out its reservoir and give it a good rinse. Stash the cleaner in a safe place, and avoid walking on your carpet while it remains damp. Walking on it before it's completely dry will cause new stains.
