How Do Office Party Games Improve Morale?

  1. Refocus Negative Energy

    • Although project deadlines, performance meetings and contract negotiations are essential parts of workplace operations, preparing for these events can create stress. The workplace can seem dreadful when there is no positive outlet for negative emotions. Negative energy can breed backstabbing, gossiping, and workplace dissension that adversely affects productivity and compliance. Office party games can improve morale by allowing everyone to take a deep breath and reducing tension between departments, management levels and individuals. The "dunking" game is a popular way for employees to release frustration without causing hurt feelings or physical damage to each other. This game features a member of management in a water tank that is activated by an employee striking the target mechanism. Since employees can earn dunking privileges based on performance and attitude, tough times are easier to withstand.

    Allow Coworkers to Interact

    • Although employees may develop close relationships with people in their immediate surroundings, it's important to know other "faces" within the organization. This applies to members of management as well as employees in satellite locations. The "out of sight, out of mind" mentality can lead to decreased workplace morale. Because employees don't associate a face with the name that signs their checks or delivers their supplies, less care may be taken to assist or show concern for these team members. Employees left out of the loop can easily develop feelings of isolation and disconnection from the main office. Office party games improve morale by bringing office workers together in the spirit of competition. These games also help coworkers see each other in different roles. For example, the normal lines that separate management from non-management are erased during a team relay. This type of team building allows different leaders to emerge.

    Builds Departmental Unity

    • The competitive nature of the workplace can pit coworker against coworker for coveted promotions, recognition and even office space. If left unchecked, departmental productivity and morale can be crippled by jealousy and hard feelings. Office party games have the power to unite departments in a common cause. Defeating a rival department at a scavenger hunt or word scramble promotes teamwork and a shared sense of responsibility. Winning departments can bask in the glow of victory while losing departments can work towards future success. Positive feeling experienced during office party games can leak over into daily operations. Coworkers who usually don't agree can find common ground during team-building activities.
