    Prepping the Floor

  1. The first step to any hardwood floor installation is to choose the wood and have it delivered. But if you are installing over plywood you need to prep the area first. That way you can unload the wood into the room you want to install it in and allow it to adjust to the room. You can install hardwood right on top of plywood, or lay down a layer of felt (asphalt paper) or another sub floor layer. Once this is complete, snap chalk lines onto the felt along each one of the floor joists. They are most likely spaced every 16 inches along the floor.
  2. Installing the First Row

  3. Once the wood is delivered and has time to adjust begin the installation of the first row. Cut your sections using a miter saw to fit the length of the wall. Lay the first row up against the wall with the tongue groove facing away from the wall. Leave space for expansion of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Drill a priming hole through the board and into the floor then tack it down with a finish nail through this hole. Check to be sure the board is flush and straight all the way down the wall as you nail the board.
  4. Completing the Rest of the Rows

  5. Now, continue to lay down the rest of the rows. Lay the next row of flooring boards flush against the first board. Nudge them up against the board so they mate with the tongue groove. Ensure the boards are fitting tightly against the board and using an air hammer, drive a nail through the outside tongue groove and into the flooring. Drive in a nail every few feet and try to hit a joist if possible. As you install the boards watch to be sure they do not bubble up or rise in any area. If they do, remove the flooring board and reset it in place. This will give you a better installation.
