Making an ATV Snow Plow
-
Shaping the Plow
-
The first step in making an ATV snowplow is to shape your metal. You should have a 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch thick sheet of 12-gauge steel or heavy gauge aluminum to start with. This needs to be curved slightly using a metal bending press with steel rollers. The metal press should be as wide as the plow. Insert the metal sheet into the press rollers and bend the steel into the desired shape. This forms the basic body of the plow.
Installing the Iron Blade
-
All snow plows have an iron blade along the bottom which absorbs most of the shock and wear of being dragged across asphalt. This is absolutely necessary if you want your ATV snow plow to last more than a few seasons. The iron blade is as long as the plow is wide and about 3 inches wide. Grind the edge of the iron blade to a dull point. Attach it to the end of the plow blade using a welder or by drilling holes into the iron with a carbide tipped, high velocity drill bit. Use rivets to secure the blade to the snow plow.

Mounting Bars
-
The final step is to add the brackets that allow the plow to be mounted to the mounting kit. There are a variety of mounting kits out there, but most will attach to the plow near the bottom of the blade. Many use a cotter pin to attach the plow to the mounting bracket. You will need to see exactly where the mounting system is going to be in order to fashion the brackets for it. So, mount this first then line the plow up to the mount kit to see where the two will join. From a double-ply of the same steel you used to create to plow blade, or from harder, stronger iron, shape the mounting brackets. Use grinders and metal cutters to create them. Then weld them into place, after attaching the mounting kit and seeing where the two brackets need to be placed.
