    Safety First

  1. Use a sturdy ladder when cleaning your canvas awning. It's best to do a job like this with two people. One person should be on hand to hold the ladder and pass items up and down to the person doing the actual cleaning.
Start by removing any debris from the awning, using a broom.

Mix a solution of dishwashing detergent and water, and pour it into a spray bottle. Never use any products containing bleach on canvas awnings; the bleach can rot the fabric. Spray the entire awning, including the valance, and scrub with a soft scrub brush. Repeat this process a few times until all stains are removed.

Rinse the awning thoroughly with a garden hose.
  4. Protect

  5. Applying a fabric protector after cleaning will extend the life of your canvas awning.

After the canvas has dried for a few hours, it's time to apply a water repellent for use on fabric. Most often found in spray form, several brands are available at home and garden stores or marine stores. This will protect the fabric and help prevent serious staining. Follow the manufacturer's directions for using the spray.
