From Quick Guide: Flat Panel Monitors

    Types of Computer Monitors

  1. Determine the type of computer monitor that you have. There are two types of monitors: CRT and LCD monitors. CRT monitors are big and bulky compared to LCD monitors. CRT monitors take up more space and are becoming less and less common. The screen of a CRT monitor is made out of convex glass. LCD monitors are predominately found in laptops, however, they are becoming more and more common with desktop computers. LCD monitors have a flat screen that is made out of a special type of polarized glass. Because of this, LCD screens are more delicate.
  2. Cleaning a CRT Monitor

  3. The material you use to clean your monitor depends largely on the type of monitor you have. However, before you begin cleaning anything, the monitor needs to be turned off. Turning the power off is helpful because you can see all the fingerprints and smears on the screen. If you have a CRT monitor, special monitor cleaning wipes are available to use if you want to go that route. However, a much cheaper method would be to use paper towels and a glass cleaning spray. Always spray onto the paper towel or cloth, then wipe the screen, so the liquid does not drip. Wipe the screen in a circular manner, then use another paper towel to dry the screen.
  4. Cleaning an LCD Monitor

  5. LCD monitors are cleaned differently than CRT monitors because the screen is made out of a different type of glass. If you ever touch the screen, it tends to cause a swirling effect. Always treat an LCD monitor with care when cleaning it. Never pick or scratch the dirt off with your fingers. To clean an LCD monitor it is necessary to first wipe the screen with an anti-static cloth. This will remove dust and hair from the screen. Next use a special LCD cleaning wipe that can also be found at a computer store and dab a very small amount of alcohol onto it. There are packages for sale that include an anti-static cloth, cleaning wipes and cleaning spray. So this may be your best bet. Remember to never use paper towels or any other abrasive materials because they can scratch your screen. Also refrain from using window cleaning solution on your screen because an LCD monitor is not made out of typical glass.
