Decorating a Fish Tank
  1. Background

    • Adding a background is the quickest and easiest way to begin decorating a fish tank. The background sets the tone for the rest of the decorations and brings instant color and interest to your aquarium. Choices of backgrounds are almost unlimited, from solid colors to realistic ocean scenes to futuristic space scenes. When choosing a background, consider your room's decor as well as the feel you want your aquarium to have. Also remember that the background is just the starting point for decorating and while it looks good to human eyes, it offers no hiding place or security for the fish.

    Plants

    • Whether live or artificial, plants add texture, height and interest to an aquarium. They also reduce stress in fish by offering them a place to hide. Choose plants that fit the theme you are trying to create in your fish tank and that are easily cleaned. Stick to two or three different types of plants, but don't overcrowd them in the tank. Too many plants can make cleaning difficult.

    Rocks

    • Rocks add color and visual interest to the human eye, and provide shelter and hiding places for fish. Before adding rocks, make sure they are aquarium safe and won't leech minerals into the water that could be harmful to your fish. Choose colors that either complement or contrast with the background. Place rocks so that fish can hide under and around them without getting stuck. Rocks with holes, arches or miniature caverns are favorites with many fish.
