Raising Money for a School Sports Club

  1. Get Permission

    • Sports teams need to raise money for a variety of reasons throughout the year. There are a number of ways to raise funds, and some can be quite a lot of fun for the participants. Before planning a fundraiser, you should check with the school administration to get permission to hold the fundraiser. Some schools have strict guidelines about what type of fundraisers can be held during the year. For example, some schools won't let students raise money in front of stores, while other schools encourage it.

    Hold a Car Wash

    • Holding a car wash is always a good way to raise funds. If possible, have the car wash in a large parking lot where several vehicles can be washed at the same time. Have the athletes alternate "advertising" by holding posters near the roadway. The rest of the athletes can work as the car washers.

    Try Selling Candy

    • Candy bar sales are a big hit with students, and can be an easy way to raise money for a school sports team. Athletes can offer a variety of candy for sale at their schools, their churches, and to neighbors and relatives. Offer a small prize for the "big seller" as an incentive to sell more.

    Have a Raffle

    • Sell chances to win a prize. Talk to booster club members and ask them to provide a new item to be raffled off. If possible, have more than one prize. For example, offer season tickets to the games for that sport as one prize and a donated television as the grand prize. Print tickets and sell to other students, faculty and parents.

    Hold a Rummage Sale

    • Have parents and booster bring their unwanted items to a central location and have a rummage sale. Make sure that you inspect all items to be sure they are appropriate for a school rummage sale. This includes checking logos on clothing, scanning through books and making sure that all items are clean and usable. Be sure to advertise in the local newspaper, and by posting flyers.
