Writing Strategic Plans
-
Be Realistic
-
When writing a strategic plan for your business, make sure your plan is realistic. When creating your strategic plan, research successes and failures of other companies in your field. Their experiences can make it much easier to create your own realistic strategic plan. Take into consideration the financial standing of your company and how heavily leveraged in debt the company is when developing your strategic plan as well.
Make Your Strategic Plan Measurable
-
Setting long-term goals are great when creating a strategic plan, but there should also be checkpoints throughout the time frame you have set for your entire plan. Use these checkpoints to analyze how you are doing so far toward meeting your goal. This will help you determine if you need to make adjustments to your plan as you are either ahead or behind pace, or possibly in a situation where you have found out part of your plan is not feasible.
Strategic plans should be treated as blueprints. They are your road map to succeeding in your business, but they are not the "be all and end all" in your goal to succeed. Exceeding expectations at checkpoints in your plan might open up the opportunity to expand your strategic plan in ways you did not anticipate when it was written.

Get Outside Input
-
It's great to write the perfect strategic business plan all on your own, but that can be very difficult. After you have a rough draft or idea of your strategic plan, ask other business professionals that you trust to look it over and make any suggestions freely that they wish. This is especially helpful from others in the same or a similar industry to yours. They will be able to help you determine if your strategic goals are obtainable and if your plan is written in a way that permits flexibility. An outside pair of eyes can bring up issues or flaws in your strategic plan that you might not see because you are too personally attached to your plan.
