Houses, sidewalks and patios require 2,000 to 2,900 PSI. If you're going to strip paint or use the pressure washer on grease spots and other stains, you'll need 3,000 to 5,000 PSI.

This is known as a direct drive washer, and it is the simplest model for most homeowners. It's also the most compact, which makes for easier storage.

One-piece valves are better than multiple pieces because they are cheaper and easier to replace. The plunger should either be ceramic or ceramic-coated over stainless steel to help it last longer. The pump heads should be brass, not aluminum, as this will prevent adverse reactions to water. Moving parts should be made of stainless steel, which improves their durability.

Pressure washers run on electricity, gas, or diesel and oil power. If you will be using the washer for light household use and want to be able to use it inside, electricity will be sufficient. If you may be using it in areas where an outlet is not available or will be using it for heavy-duty jobs, gas or diesel will give you more horsepower and allow you to use it anywhere, regardless of the availability of electricity.
