Writing a Travel Agent Brochure

  1. Make preparations

    • Writing a travel agent brochure should be informative, but above all else, it should be fun, appealing and professional. You want the brochure to catch people's eyes without being over the top or too flashy. In addition, the information contained in the brochure should make people want to go to the destination the brochure talks about. You should be able to sell the destination to complete strangers. Make sure that you are well prepared before you sit down to do any actual writing. This will include research, organization of thoughts and ideas, double checking prices and the availability of accommodations, as well as airfare prices, cost for transportation to and from hotels and airports and other incidentals. Once you have gathered all the information that you wish to include in the brochure and have organized your thoughts and ideas, it's time to sit down and write.

    Gather information

    • You should have a good idea of what sort of photos you want to include in your brochure. If you are putting the brochure together, photos are essential in selling the destination. Photo quality and placement are also very important. However, if you are simply writing the material to be included in the brochure, then you will most likely have a graphic artist who will put the brochure together and determine the placement of copy and photos. Either way, you need a solid foundation to build on, and photos provide the reader with samples of what they can expect once they reach that destination. One of the most important pieces of information you can include in a travel brochure is the destination itself. Is it a mountain ski resort, tropical getaway or historical site that you are trying to sell to the consumer? Think of all the positive qualities of the place that you are featuring and write them down. How far is the cabin from the ski slopes? How close is the beach to restaurants and bars? These are the sorts of things that travelers want to know. Are there any family activities available? Are there activities specifically for children? Give information on activities, as well as prices, if available. Phone numbers or websites through which more information may be obtained are also important. Also, information about the local visitors' bureaus in that particular location is another key piece of information that needs to be included.

    Organize and write

    • When you gather all this information, you can then organize it. Start out by talking a bit about the destination and its qualities. Then go into activities that are available for singles, families or children. Give prices and other resources that the traveler can turn to for more information, such as a phone number or website address. Let the traveler know about accommodations. How many hotels or bed and breakfasts are in the area? What is the price range for accommodations? If you don't have this information, give the traveler a way to find this information (i.e., phone numbers or web addresses). Then let the traveler know about transportation. Is public transportation available to and from the activities that you've outlined? Will a rental car be needed? Contact information for rental car services is essential. Paragraphs should be short, as space on a travel brochure is limited. Photos should be thoughtfully chosen, according to which best show activities at the destination. If you do not constantly have to update the brochure, then you can omit prices; however, contact information is essential when omitting prices for lodging or transportation. Make sure you give the traveler a way of finding this information on his own.
