    1. Remove the Clutter

      • Contemporary design is spacious and without clutter. Remove all small items and collectibles that give the room a sense of busyness. Leave the walls clear of objects except for one or two walls. In the living room, you may want to remove the coffee table because it will draw clutter. In the kitchen, keep the counters clear of cooking items and cookbooks. In the bedroom, remove items from cluttered bedside stands. Leave a table lamp for reading. Put books and reading glasses in the drawers. In the bathroom, put beauty aids behind closed doors. In the dining room, put away place settings and opt for one large centerpiece.

      Color

      • The contemporary decor is based on neutral colors and dramatic color combinations. Consider black and white or light earth tones. For bold color, look to primary color schemes such as red and blue or try tone on tone colors for a softer effect. Choose wood furniture that is dark or light. Avoid medium tones. Consider white walls with a black sofa or white walls and a white or beige sofa. You may choose to paint one wall a bold color. Accent with a few pillows and art collections, such as vivid blue vases or alabaster sculptures. A bold geometric painting on a white wall creates a focal point. Floors in light stained wood or tile add the illusion of spaciousness. Add a few area rugs in bright or bold colors for accent.

      Lighting and Finishing Touches

      • Consider track lighting or canned lighting. Put lights on dimmer switches to create a mood. Floor lamps or table lamps in black metal are contemporary choices. Consider a ceiling fan and light combination in brushed nickel for a contemporary look. Keep the windows undressed to allow the natural light to filter into the room. Place a large mirror on one wall for added reflection.

In the kitchen, work with large tiles instead of small tiles. Grays, silver, and black are dramatic colors for a kitchen. Accent with solid colored dishes, such as red, yellow or blue.

In the bedroom, use a platform bed for a contemporary look. Consider a silk comforter or suede comforter. Toss on one or two large pillows for accent.

In the bathroom, use mirrored tile around the tub and above the sink. Accent with a few colorful towels, but avoid too many. Remember, less is more.
