  1. Garden Walls Contribute To Both Beauty and Privacy

    • A brick wall can add a beautiful backdrop to any garden and much-needed privacy to any backyard or side yard. Hiring a contractor to build a brick wall can cost a small fortune. Why not take on the project and build your own brick wall for the garden this weekend? It may be easier than you think, you'll save a ton and you'll love what you have accomplished.

    Do A Practice Run

    • It's a good idea to stack the bricks up first to get a general idea of high you want the wall to be and how many you will need to complete your project. You will want to start with a flat surface so that the bricks will be level. When ready, use a chalk line to measure and mark out the area where you want the wall to be placed.

    Mixing The Mortar

    • The hardest part of building a brick garden wall is mixing the mortar and applying it properly. You may want to try a few practice sessions with a few bricks and mortar to make sure you are layering it correctly before you actually start building the wall. The formula for mortar is generally 1 part cement to 5 parts sand. It should have a thick oatmeal consistency and must be used within 1 to 1 1/2 hours before it dries. Layer the bricks, staggering them in a typical brick fashion. Be sure to add at least a 1/2-inch mortar spread evenly onto each brick before laying it down. Check the wall as you work with a level to make sure the finished project will be straight and pleasing to the eye.
