    Buffing the Scratches

  1. Chrome can scratch and rust and lose its beautiful look. The scratches in the chrome need to be buffed down with a not-too-harsh polisher. The best method is using a fine steel polisher or extra-soft steel wool pad. Also purchase chrome polisher to dip the pad in before buffing. With the pad coated in chrome polisher, gently scrub the rust and chrome scratches in a circular motion and reapply polisher as needed.
  2. Cleaning the Polish Off

  3. After you have sufficiently scrubbed the chrome scratches, rinse the area with water. Use a clean towel to wipe and wash any polish off. Apply car wax on the chrome area you just polished. Allow the car wax to dry for a bit and then circularly buff the car wax off with a dry microfiber towel.
  4. Re-Dipping the Chrome Part

  5. If, after polishing the scratches and buffing the chrome, the rust, pits or scratches are still present and unsightly, then the best bet is to have the piece re-chromed. You can either remove the chrome piece and take it to your local body repair shop to have it re-dipped in chrome, or you can take your entire vehicle to the shop to address the concern and have the piece re-chromed.
