      • Get a plastic lunch box. Cut vent strips into the two biggest faces of the lunch box to make the vents for air circulation. Make the vents the width of a 1/4-inch drill bit. Do each hole parallel to the others by drilling a hole where the vent hole is to start and another one where the hole is to end. Use a wire saw to cut between the two holes and use the drill bit to widen the channel cut by the wire saw. Space the vent holes apart by a half inch. Leave 2-inch margins uncut around the edges of each lunch box face.

      Add Supports

      • Measure the distance from vent to vent inside the lunch box. Cut four dowel rods this length. Glue these dowel rods at each corner of the vent at one face inside the lunch box so that it extends out toward the other vent at the corresponding (nearby) corners.

      Foil and Copper

      • Wrap a strip of metal foil tape around the perimeter of the dowel rods, 1 centimeter above the base where the rods are glued in place. One centimeter above the tape on the opposite side of the tape along the dowel rods, wrap a copper wire around the dowel rods as it is run from dowel rod to dowel rod. When the wire reaches the original dowel rod, the whole interior should look like a fence with two levels.

      Wires

      • Attach alligator clips to either end of two wires. Put on non-conductive gloves and make sure the wires do not touch. Attach one end of each wire to a lantern battery and the other end to either the foil tape or the copper wire (exclusive of the other wire).

      Case Closed

      • Close the lunch box. After a moment, a breeze shows ions are generated.

      Warning

      • Do not run this device with people in the room, and let the ions air out before entering the room since they are potentially cancerous. Always keep electricity away from water and excessive levels of ions away from living systems (especially humans and animals).
