Replacement of Oscillating Fan Blades

Opening up the Fan

  • Most modern fans with oscillating blades are fairly simple to disassemble. The fan blades are contained within a wire grille. First, unplug the fan. Remove the front of the wire grille, either by popping up the clips or unscrewing the screws that are anchoring it in place. The oscillating blades should be connected in the center of the fan and anchored by a round, screw-on cap. Unscrew the cap and slide the blades off of the peg they're resting on. You'll be left with the motor compartment and the back of the grille mounted on the fan's base.

Cleaning the Fan

  • Before replacing the oscillating blades, it's important to wipe down the fan parts with a damp washcloth. This keeps dust and dirt from getting inside the motor or disrupting the motion of the blades. Run a damp cloth over all exposed surfaces of the unplugged fan. Be sure to dust both sides of the wire grille, as well as the oscillating blades if you plan on reusing that piece. If you have a new oscillating blade section, make sure it's out of the packaging and free of dust.

Replacing the Blades

  • Slide the oscillating blade section onto the peg, with the blades curving toward the front of the fan. Place the screw-on cap on the tip of the peg and twist it until it's tight, making sure that the blades are straight on the peg. Reconnect the front of the wire grille with the screws or clips and make sure it's securely fastened.
