    Basic interests and training

  1. People who are interested in becoming wedding planners need to understand that while it is a rewarding career, it can also be very stressful and time-consuming. A career as a wedding planner is suitable for people who like planning and organizing events, love details and have at least some experience with event planning. The first step for any aspiring wedding planner is to look into becoming certified. There are a number of companies that provide training in being a wedding planner (see Resources). Becoming certified shows clients and other professionals that you are committed and able to handle the responsibilities of professionally planning a wedding.
  2. Registration and other legalities

  3. The next step is to officially register your business. Different cities and counties have different requirements to register a business, so check with your local government to find out everything that you need to do. Pick a name for your business. In addition to formally registering your business, find a local attorney who can give you legal advice. Get business insurance to protect you from any liability or accidents. Most insurance offices can provide you with advice on what kind of insurance to get.
  4. Advertising

  5. Advertising is the best way for your clients to find you. Bridal magazine ads are expensive but can be a very effective way of reaching potential clients. If your city or region has some local publications, advertise in those. In addition, online advertising will offer a less expensive (or even free) way of getting your name out. If you want to advertise over the Internet, it is also important to have a well-designed website. Many brides are in a hurry, so your website's appearance and first impression count a lot. For best results, have your website professionally designed by someone who has experience creating websites for small businesses.
  6. Offices and professional associations

  7. An office that is separate from your home is optimal, but you may start off working out of your house. Have a computer with a high-speed connection, a printer and a fax machine so you can receive contracts from your office. Make sure your office is tidy and cheerful. Joining a professional wedding planner association is a great way to develop your contacts as well as make yourself stand out professionally. These associations will also help you continue your education.
