How Does an Iridologist Spend a Workday?
-
-
Iridology is the method of reading a patient's health by observing the patient's irises. Iridology is prominent in Europe but it does not have the backing of the mainstream medical community in the United States (see Resources below). Nevertheless, many practitioners perform routine examinations of the irises of their patients and evaluate these examinations according to the iridology charts. Based on the findings, the iridologist makes recommendations to the patient concerning diet, herbal supplementation and physician treatment.
-
The iridologist begins his examination of his patient by looking over the medical history provided by the patient. He then proceeds to treat the patient by seating the patient in a chair and looking at the iris. If the iridologist does not have special equipment, he will use a penlight, similar to the one an optomologist uses, to view the patients irises. These proceedings are painless and much like a regular eye examination.

The iridologist will examine the iris and compare this iris to the iris map charts (see Resources below). She usually knows just by looking whether the iris is normal. By noting the lines that occur in the iris as well as other marks and distinctions, the iridologist can see the patient's well being or dysfunction. She uses what she sees to point the patient in the right direction for better health. She will advise the patient that she cannot diagnose what may be wrong but he can direct the patient to a healthier lifestyle. She may recommend dietary changes and herbal treatment as well. The iridologist may schedule a follow up visit with the patient if necessary. After each patient examination, the iridologist will spend a few minutes updating the patient file with his findings.
-
Iridologists are not required to have formal training but most take pride in learning the field and becoming certified. International Iridology Practitioners Association (see Resources below) exists to increase knowledge and awareness of iridology. They offer forums for exchange of ideas and information, which many professionals utilize especially when they have a case that is challenging.
-
Iridology is not a method of treatment so it is common to find iridologists practicing another form of alternative medicine such as acupuncture, herbal therapy or holistic medicine to complement their iridology practice. Iridologists practicing more than one form of alternative medicine may incorporate all of their activities in one day or they may alternate days. After the iris examination, an iridologist/acupuncturist may schedule a patient for the alternative treatment based on the exam.
