How Does a Replacement Remote Control Work?
Carrier Signals
-
The remote control that comes with a TV, DVD player or home theater system typically uses an infrared signal to send instructions to the device, although radio waves are sometimes used as well. The signal that gives the device instructions is embedded in a carrier signal. The carrier signal is tuned so that only the device that belongs to that remote control can receive it. That's why your DVD remote doesn't usually interfere with your home theater system. If you lose the remote or it gets damaged, you must find a new remote control that can transmit the same carrier signal.
Modulation
-
It would be difficult for manufacturers and consumers if replacing a remote control meant you had to find one with the right carrier signal frequency. Universal replacement remote controls overcome this by altering, or modulating, the carrier signal frequency. Now one remote control can be programmed to operate any device.
Programming
-
The replacement remote control must be programmed with the proper code to transmit the proper modulated carrier signal. Usually, this is done by entering the 3- or 4-digit code assigned to the manufacturer and device you are replacing the remote for. These codes are included in the packaging of the replacement remote control, or many of them can be found on the Internet. Some replacement remotes have the ability to copy the correct code from the original remote, but in order for that to work you would have to buy the replacement while the original was still operational.
Multiple Devices
-
Many replacement remote controls are "all-in-one," meaning they can control all of your devices. All you have to do is input the correct code for each device and the replacement becomes the only remote you need. When you input those codes, you are essentially programming each of the selection buttons with its appropriate code. That way, when you press "TV," you are entering the code for the TV into the remote. If you switch to "DVD," you change the code to the appropriate one for your DVD player. Rather than reprogramming the remote each time you want to use a different device, you simply press a button.
