Troubleshooting Dell Computer Speakers

  1. Make Certain They Are On

    • While it may seem like the simplest of checks, many times troubleshooting your Dell speakers is simply a matter of making sure they are turned on. Computer speakers aren't like car or stereo speakers. They have an on/off switch, and usually at least two volume controls. Make sure the speaker switch is turned on and turned up (this control is usually on the right hand speaker) and make sure the volume is up on your computer control panel. Also, make sure the speakers are fully plugged in.

    Check Them On Another Computer

    • A quick way of seeing if the problem is with the speakers or the computer is to plug your speakers into another computer and see if you still have the same problems. If so, the problem is likely with the speakers, and they may need to be replaced. If the problem goes away on the other computer, the problem is with the computer not the speakers.

    Update/Install Drivers

    • Computer speakers and all other peripherals work best when they are powered by software called drivers. These drivers usually come with the speakers. If you still have the CD that came with your Dell speakers, insert it in your computer's disk drive and follow the on-screen instructions to download the correct drivers. If not, go to Dell's website and search for the drivers with your speaker's model number. You can then download the driver directly from the website.

    Before Contacting Dell Support

    • The nice thing about owning a Dell computer is that they provide a diagnostic CD for you to use. Many times, this can solve not only speaker problems, but any other problems you may be having with your Dell computer. To use the CD, restart your computer with the Drivers and Utilities CD in your disk drive. As soon as the Dell logo appears on the screen, hit F2 on your keyboard. Select "Boot Order" from the menu and change the order, so diskette drive is first, CD/DVD drive is second and HDD drive is third. Restart once again, and you will be in diagnostics mode. Follow the instructions onscreen to allow the CD to find the problem with your speakers. To restore your computer to its previous state, simply remove the CD, follow the directions above and change the boot order back to the way it originally was.

Known Issue with Dell 700m Speakers

    • Many people have experienced sound issues with their Dell 700m laptop speakers. This typically stems from the wiring. Dell manufactured these in such a way that the wire to the right speaker actually rubs against a sharp edge, eventually causing the speaker to malfunction. Dell has not addressed the issue officially, but your Dell warranty will cover the problem.
