How Does a Stationary Bike Work?

What Is a Stationary Bike?
-
At its most basic, a stationary bicycle has a "saddle" (also known as a seat), pedals, and something that approximates a set of handlebars attached to a frame that resembles a bicycle. In general, stationary bikes do not actually have wheels and thus are not bicycles in the literal sense. However, a bicycle can be made into a stationary bicycle by putting it on rollers (which will help keep it in place) or a trainer (effectively preventing the wheels from getting any traction).
Basic Mechanics of the Bike
-
The most basic stationary bike will consist of a set of pedals hooked up to a chain. This chain is connected to a gear that powers the rotation of the wheel. Pedaling moves the chain, which in turn moves the gears, which then moves the wheel. Depending on the bicycle, the wheel can be set up to be easier or harder to move. Also, the wheel is often connected to an odometer that measures how much the wheel has rotated and, as a result, how far (or how fast) you would be going if you were on a regular bicycle.

Types of Stationary Bikes
-
The stationary bike industry has recently experienced a sudden rise in the types of bikes available. There are recumbent stationary bikes in addition to upright ones. Some bikes have the pedals connected to the handlebars so that the upper body can be worked along with the legs. Many bikes now have an option to increase the resistance against which you pedal, which helps simulates different levels of incline. These can work using magnets, friction or fans, and can sometimes be controlled by a computer program.
How Do Stationary Bicycles Help With Exercise?
-
The exercise that a stationary bicycle can give you is pretty similar to that of a regular bicycle, because the motion is essentially the same. Both use the same type of pedal system that lets the legs flex and extend. While this sort of exercise doesn't build a lot of muscle mass, it's good for muscle tone. In addition, because the legs (especially the quadriceps) are such a large group of muscles, this can create an extremely good aerobic and cardiovascular workout.
