Becoming a Dog Trainer

1. There are many ways for individuals to become dog trainers. Special courses are offered for dog training. Some trainers learn through hands-on experience or an apprenticeship. If this is how you opt to learn, contact local dog trainers to find out if they offer apprenticeship programs.
2. Several colleges offer classes, seminars, dog behavioral programs, conferences and workshops. Some of these programs teach the fundamentals of dog training through book knowledge, but many courses also offer hands-on instruction, which is necessary to learn the actual techniques.
3. It will take 3 to 5 years to compete the courses and become a certified professional dog trainer. An important part of dog training is gauging temperament. This is something that you will only learn through hands-on experience. While attending these classes, you will learn the steps and signs of different types of dogs' behaviors. You must be able to put those lessons into practice when you are gauging temperaments.
4. Patience and hard work are the keys to becoming a successful dog trainer. Certification organizations will require you to complete a specified number of trainer hours, take a written exam and pass a practical exam.
