    Purpose and Design

  1. When designing a varsity jacket, think about how and when the it will be worn. A jacket for varsity skiing, for instance, might serve a different purpose than one for track and field. These jackets are a source of pride, and students want to show them off. Give them opportunity by picking a durable jacket with a true workhorse base.

Some teams require only fleece or windbreaker-type fabric, while winter sports may merit something sturdier. Keep the student atlhete in mind when picking fabric. Satin jackets will look great on an all-female dance team, but not as appropriate on a co-ed cheer squad.
  2. Colors and Look

  3. The base colors of the jacket should be the school or team colors. Letters and trim can be contrasting shades that are easily legible. Some suppliers even allow customers to pick out custom snap colors, as well.

For the chenille lettering, you can use graduation year, jersey number or team position. Other nice touches are team or personal names. Manufacturers also have many patches to choose from, ranging from lacrosse to choir. You can also go with complimentary border colors.
  4. Think of the Cost

  5. Varsity jackets are expensive, usually above the $100 mark. Since this high cost can prohibit many students from obtaining a jacket, why not think of creative ways to raise money to pay for them? Selling boosters, running a car wash or holding a casino night is a great way to raise cash to cover the cost of a varsity jacket. Furthermore, these kinds of activities bring a team together for a common cause off the playing field.

Letterman jackets are a status symbol and prized heirloom to many, so pack as many positive team-building memories into the experience as possible. Shared effort will make the jacket all the more terrific to the wearer.
