Troubleshooting an HP Printer
  1. Check the Obvious

    • Check your HP printer for obvious problems that you can easily correct with simple solutions. Verify that the plug is fully inserted into the wall outlet and that the other end of the cord is inserted fully into the printer. Make sure the printer is turned on and that the paper tray is filled with clean, straight-edged paper. Verify that you are using the correct printer cartridges and that they are correctly installed by opening the printer cartridge access and checking the numbers. The HP cartridges have unique numbers on them to use in specific printer series. Check your HP printer manual or at the HP website if you aren't sure about the cartridge numbers to use in your printer. Your HP printer may work correctly if you were able to correct any of these obvious problems.

    Reboot the Printer

    • Reboot the printer by holding the "On/Off" button down for several seconds, until the printer turns off. Allow the HP printer to remain off for a minimum of 30 seconds before turning it back on. This simple procedure also helps if your printer appears to have frozen or is not responding. Remember to visit the HP website or look in your HP user manual for additional suggestions. An active chat assistant is available at the HP website if you need extra help.

    Reinstall Software, Download Drivers

    • Locate the original software disc that came with your HP printer when you bought it. Use the "Install/Uninstall" utility found on your computer's control panel to uninstall the printer software from your computer. Disconnect the printer from the computer and reinstall the printer software as directed directly from the disc. Once the software has finished installing, connect the printer to the computer again to see if it works. You may need to download new drivers or driver updates for your computer. Visit the HP website and check for new drivers or updates for your specific hardware.

    Replace Parts

    • If the print is too light on your documents or an error message says, "printer is out of ink," replace your printer cartridges to correct the problem. Realign your cartridges if the print is fuzzy. This process is usually automatic if you install a new cartridge, or remove a cartridge then put it back. If you receive an error message indicating that your printer is busy or the memory is full, allow the printer to finish printing. Then, clear the memory of the printer by printing or purging saved documents. Another option may be to add an SDRAM DIMM memory module to increase the available printer memory. If your printer is not picking up paper correctly, try replacing the ADF pickup roller assembly. Remember to unplug your printer before servicing it.
