Taking the GED Test at Home
-
Introduction
-
Without a high school diploma or GED it is almost impossible to compete in the job market. According to the U.S. Department of Education, those who finish their GED, and especially those who go on from their GED program and finish college, make substantially more money than those who do not. Many employers will not even consider employing someone without a GED or high school diploma.
GED From Home
-
Currently there are no states that allow a student to take the actual GED test from home. The GED requires that the student complete the test without help from others around him, and without help from additional resources such as books or the Internet. There is no way to police these policies if the applicant were to take the test from home. However, there are plenty of ways to prepare and qualify for the GED test from the comfort of your own home.

Preparing for the GED
-
Though you cannot take the actual GED online, there are many courses and study aids available online to help you prepare for the GED. These instruction programs are specifically designed to cover and review each section of the GED that you will be tested on. High school teaches you a phenomenal amount of information in the three to four years that you spend there. The GED covers much of the information you would have learned if you would have attended. This makes it nearly impossible to pass the GED without some amount of preparation. Do not underestimate the power of a GED preparation course, as it will teach you the skills needed to successfully pass the test. Plus you can do it all online from the comfort of your own home.
Pre-Tests
-
There are many websites that allow you to take sample versions of the GED before you take the real test in a certified testing center. This will help you learn what areas of study you need to improve on to ensure that you will be successful in passing the GED. For a list of websites that offer practice GED tests, see the additional resources section of this article.
Scams
-
There may be websites online that offer to allow you to take the GED test online. However, these sources are not certified by the American Council on Education (ACE), which administers the test. Furthermore, the ACE warns that any tests taken through non-certified sources will not be accepted by the government, military or any other employer as valid.
