Cooking With a Gas Stove

  • There are two ways to turn on a gas stove. One is by turning the knob, which automatically ignites the fire. You can hear some ticking sounds when you try to turn it on, then it will ignite the burner, and you can proceed with adjusting the flame. This method is common with newer gas stove appliances; it is standard to see them with their igniters powered by electricity. Some older gas stoves do not start with automatic ignition; therefore, you need a lighter or a match to turn the burners on. Light up the match or lighter and put it close to the burner, and then carefully turn the knob on. You will hear the hissing sound of gas as you ignite the burner. In both cases, it is important to practice extreme caution to prevent fire. To prevent flaring flames or accidental burning, put the pot or pan on top of the burner to act as a shield. Adjust the heat by turning the knob gradually to reduce or to increase the flame size. Smaller flame would lower the heat and larger flame would increase it. When done, turn the knob to the off position. Make sure that the flame turns off and there is no smell of gas remaining to prevent fires. Double-check that the knob is in the off position.

Cooking Methods

  • You can boil food, steam, pressure cook, sauté, fry and grill from a gas stove. Some modern gas cooking stoves come with different sizes of burners. You can cook several items at once, depending on the size of the cookware used, from small pans to big pots. It is standard to see four to five cook-top burners. Some five-burner gas stoves have the middle burner reserved for cooking using a wok, an Asian type of cookware that is bigger than most standard pans. A wok requires a bigger burner for even heat distribution, therefore the middle burner is often the biggest burner. Some models come with a grill used for indoor grilling, such as grilling burgers, beef, pork or fish. Some grills flip into a hot plate, which is ideal for cooking pancakes and omelets.

Gas or Electric

  • Many people prefer to cook with a gas stove than an electric stove. The most common reason why is because it is easier to regulate the heat using gas instead of electricity. For this reason, gas stoves tend to burn food less compared to electric stoves. In addition, using gas can lower your utility bill, which translates to bigger savings, especially if you cook often. It may be more expensive to buy gas stoves initially, however, the savings will add up over time due to lower utility bills. Installing gas stove requires extra preparation, due to the need for gas hook-up installation.
