    Paper

  1. Using an 8 x 11-inch piece of construction paper, fold the paper in half the long way, forming a thin rectangle. Then, press your fingers along the folded edge to make a sharp crease. Once the paper is folded, use a ruler to measure 2 inches from the non-folded edge. Draw a line in pencil. This is the "stop line." Along the folded edge, make a pencil mark for every inch of paper. Using scissors, make a cut in the folded edge of the paper at every inch mark, cutting all the way to the stop line.
  2. Poster Board

  3. Take a piece of 8 x 11-inch poster board that contrasts in color with the paper. Cut 2 inches off the poster board on the long side. Then, glue strips of tissue paper to the long side that hasn't been cut. When the glue is dry, take the cut paper and match the long edges to the poster board, making sure the paper sticks out in the middle. Glue or tape the paper to the poster board.
  4. Making the Lantern

  5. Once the glue has dried, match up the short sides of the paper, forming a cylinder and staple the ends together. Keeping the tissue paper strips at the bottom, use scissors to make two small holes directly across from each other at the lantern top. Then, tie a piece of string through the holes to form a handle. Decorate the outside of the lamp with glitter. When dry, the lantern is either placed over a small flashlight or hung on a line with many others.
