How Does a Log Cabin Kit Work?
-
Features
-
Log cabin kits are not modular homes. A log cabin kit comes in pieces, like a giant container of Lincoln Logs. Everything is included: logs for the outside walls, partitions for the interior walls, windows, roofing, trim and all the hardware necessary. Some even come with the power tools necessary to put them together. They come with the ducts for plumbing and electric already installed. Of course, every manufacturer has their own way of doing things, some easier than others, but the general features are the same all around. You will need to provide your own foundation or dig your own basement. You are also responsible for obtaining any permits and hiring an engineer, if your local codes require it.
Exterior
-
The logs for the exterior walls will come numbered so you know exactly where each one should go. They should also come pre-notched, so that they fit together perfectly. The logs are very heavy and you may need to rent heavy duty equipment to lift them in place. After the walls are up, the roof goes on and again everything will be numbered. Some manufacturers will give you a choice between asphalt and steel shingles. Steel shingles will require you to have a heavier sub roof and that will add on to the cost. Most log cabin kits come with a front porch and some with a screened in back porch, the last of the exterior features to be put up.

Interior
-
Log walls have excellent insulation properties by themselves, but some owners choose to put up dry wall on the interior of the outside walls to match the room partitions, which will come numbered like the exterior logs. Once the pieces are all assembled, you will have to get the bathroom and kitchen fixtures as well as any ceiling lights. Your local building codes may come into play regarding both the plumbing and electrical work and when it is finished it will have to be inspected in order to obtain a certificate of occupancy. With the help of a few friends, log cabin kits can work up so fast, the house can be assembled in a weekend, not counting plumbing and electric. The instructions that come with log cabin kits are easy to follow. All it takes is a knowledge of how to use basic tools.
