Where to Find the Creams

Acne scar creams can be found at your local drugstore or pharmacy. In most cases you will need a prescription to obtain the cream, which means first you will be visiting a dermatologist. If the doctor thinks a scar cream will help fade the acne scars, he will recommend a medication.

Mederma and the Others

Mederma is one type of cream that helps in the removal of scars. Cellex-c, Dermanew Microdermabrasion total body cream, and ScarGuard scarcare are a few others. (These are all available without a prescription.) They work well on mild scars by reducing, exfoliating or changing the color of the scars to make them either disappear or appear less noticeable.

If They Don't Work

Sometimes creams do not work, either because the scars are too thick or too large. If this is the case the scar removal creams might not work and a stronger application, or a different approach, will be needed. A doctor might suggest laser resurfacing, grafts, dermabrasion or chemical peels. Laser resurfacing and chemical peels remover the outer layers of skin and reduce or remove the scar tissue. Grafting replaces the scarred area with new skin, and dermabrasion uses an electrical device to remove the surface skin.
