    What is a Bamboo Steamer?

  1. A bamboo steamer is a round vessel with a woven bottom that allows steam to enter and cook the food. The steamers can be stacked on top of each other to cook multiple foods at the same time. They sit above boiling water in a pot or wok and the top steamer will have a lid.

    If you are a person who is concerned about our natural resources and is trying to "go green," then the bamboo steamer is for you. Bamboo is a grass, not a wood. It grows very fast, making it a renewable resource.
  2. Protect Your Steamer While Cooking

  3. Before you use the steamer for the first time you should rinse it out with cold water. While cooking with the steamer there are foods you can use to protect the bamboo from fish or meat oils from penetrating the bamboo weave. Lettuce leaves can be laid on the bottom of the steamer. They will still allow the steam to come through without letting the food touch the weave.

    You can also use corn husk or banana leaves. These foods may add a woodsy flavor to your food and are used well with meat. Try using parchment paper as it will not transfer any kind of taste to your more delicate foods. You will want to match up your lining with the food that you are cooking to accent or enhance the taste.
  4. Cleaning the Steamer

  5. When you are finished cooking, wash the steamer with warm water. If there is any food residue use a brush to clean it off. Don't use soap on your steamer as it may soak in and you may be able to taste it the next time you cook with it.

    If you have something that is really stubborn, try a little white vinegar in your warm water. Vinegar is a great cleaning agent and can also reduce odors. Allow the steamer to air dry until it is completely dry. This may take a little extra time if you live in a humid climate. Store in a well ventilated area so the steamer does not mold.
