Assorted plain gift bagsGather the following materials for this project: a small paper gift bag with handles, assorted themed images in different sizes and papers, Mod Podge liquid sealant, 1-inch foam brush, scissors, markers or a calligraphy pen. Also gather embellishments such as plastic themed buttons, a plastic fork and knife, fabric swatches or other decorations and trims. Have a hot glue gun and glue sticks as well. Images can include slick magazine or guide book photos of food, cooking utensils, table settings and chefs. Another good source of images and papers are expired wallpaper sample books often available for free just for the asking at decorator stores and home supply stores. -
Themed images & embellishmentsLay the undecorated gift bag flat. On top of it, arrange the various papers and images to decorate the bag, rearranging them until the layout is satisfactory. The papers and images may overlap, but they should not extend beyond either side of the gift bag. Secure the papers first, then paint the images with Mod Podge using the 1-inch foam brush. The liquid sealant is milky in color, but dries clear so any "errors" applying the sealant should not be of great concern. Let it dry completely. With the hot glue gun, attach the embellishments in random fashion or in a specific design. Let it cool. This project lends itself to making several bags at the same time so that they are available at a moment's notice if needed. - Attach a label--handmade with a marker or calligraphy pen or by computer--with Mod Podge. Let it dry. Also add a ribbon or bow and a gift tag to the recipient. As an extra bonus with the gift, insert a few favorite recipes to illustrate the purpose of the recipe gift bag. It can also include recipes from others acquainted with the recipient of the gift. These bags are excellent as party favors, and small ones can be used as place cards for special culinary event or social gathering. Any cook will appreciate a specially made gift bag to hold recipes whether they are her own cut from newspapers and magazines or ones that friends and family may offer.
