Installing Cedar Siding
-
Preparation
-
Install housewrap or Type 30 felt underlayment. Start at the bottom and wrap it around the house, stapling as you go. Overlap 6 inches when starting a new roll and 2 inches when starting the next course up. Case all the windows and doors next. If using corner boards, they should be at least 1/4-inch thicker than the shingles. Paint all the trim first unless the shingles will have the same finish.
Layout
-
Shingles can have from 4 to 7 inches of exposure, depending on your preference. With 4 inches exposure you will need five bundles of shingles per 100 square feet. Layout the courses by measuring from a point 1 inch below the top of the foundation to the top of the wall, and transferring that measurement to a story pole (a long piece of strapping). Divide the measurement equally according to how much exposure you want. While maintaining the pole at the same height, use it to check that the courses will match the tops and bottoms of windows and doors. Adjust the measurements on the pole if necessary, then mark the courses on the wall.

Technique
-
Always put up shingles starting at the corners and working towards the middle, to ensure a tight fit with the corner boards. Using 5d galvanized nails, put two in each shingle about an inch or two above where the bottom of the next course will fall. Leave a 1/8 to 1/4-inch space between the shingles, and offset each course at least 1 1/2 inches from the course below.
