  1. Color schemes

    • Some little girls dream of being princesses; some little boys dream of slaying dragons. Regardless of whether you are the parent of a dragon slayer or a princess, you can turn your child's bedroom into a room straight out of the Renaissance. Start with choosing a color theme for your child's bedroom. If you are decorating a girl's bedroom, paint the walls either pink or purple. A light shade of either color will work best. If you are decorating a boy's room, choose a very light shade of gray for the walls. You can also choose other colors if you'd rather have a more vivid color scheme. Blue is always a good choice as well. If you're feeling creative and can do such things, buy some stencils at an art supply store or hobby store and draw clouds on the ceiling of the room. You can also stencil some clouds onto the tops of the walls closest to the ceiling. After they are penciled on, fill them in with white paint to create a sky in your child's room.

    Furnishing a castle

    • Choose furniture that will go with a castle theme. You can actually purchase castle-themed beds from furniture stores or online furniture stores. If you're decorating a girl's room and the bed allows for one, make a canopy over her bed with shimmery fabric that can be purchased from a hobby store. Pink, purple or white are all good colors for a canopy. If you are decorating a boy's room, you can choose a wall onto which you can stencil dragons, or perhaps you can stencil a brick motif onto the wall. There are also cutouts resembling arched windows that can be bought through online specialty stores. Choosing pink or white, maybe even lavender bookshelves and toy boxes will add to the color scheme for your princess's bedroom. Wooden toy boxes or bookshelves will fit the dragon slayer's bedroom theme.

    Final touches

    • Curtains can add to the castle theme. Lavender, purple, white or pink sheer curtains placed over blinds or behind thicker curtains will help transform your child's bedroom. For a boy's room, blue or other dark curtains will probably work best, depending on what color you have painted the walls. You can choose a contrasting color or a matching color, depending on the look you're going for. Adding a play or child-size vanity to a princess room can make it appear as if a real princess lives there. Stenciled flowers on the walls can add a feminine touch. A boy's room will do best with small dragon figurines, or plastic swords and plastic armor. A few horse figurines can also add to the castle theme; this applies to both boys and girls. My Little Pony figurines are appropriate for girls, and regular horses are appropriate for boys. Target has a fair supply of knight, dragon and other Renaissance figurines that could enhance a boy's room.
