Setting Up a Salt Water Aquarium
-
Salt Water Aquarium Location is Important
-
Find a suitable spot to place your salt water aquarium. It is vital to put the aquarium away from any sources of heat or cold. This includes vents, windows and exterior doors. Temperature modifications will have adverse effects on salt water fish. Keep in mind, the aquarium total weight when filled with water. Verify the floor will be able to maintain the entire weight. Figure approximately ten pounds for each gallon of water your salt water aquarium holds. Locate a nearby power source that is easily accessible. You must be able to plug in all of the necessary equipment and not have to worry about tripping over the cords. Decide on the best site to set up your tank.
Buy Equipment (NOT fish)
-
Acquire any items needed. This includes a tank, tank cover with light, tank stand, power filter, hydrometer (salt water tester), gravel (crushed coral or sand), live rocks (if desired) and of course, salt water (or salt water mix). Other required components of a salt water aquarium consist of water test kits, heater, thermometer and a power strip to plug into. You may also purchase an aquarium background, various tank decorations or plants. Place the tank stand in the location selected, put the tank on it. Put gravel on the bottom, insert rocks (and other decorations) and gradually add the salt water. Set up the power filter, heater and insert the thermometer. Put the cover over the tank and turn everything on.
-
Thoroughly Cycle Your Tank Before Adding Salt Water Fish
-
The most important part of setting up a salt water aquarium is cycling the water in the tank. This slow process cannot be avoided or rushed. The aquarium water should be tested regularly for ammonia and nitrates. It must have a reading of "0" for both for at least three days. It is common for this to take any where from three and up to six weeks to happen. Purchase your compatible salt water fish. Do not overcrowd the tank and add the fish gradually. This will allow the filtration system to regulate.
